Vocational
Opportunities Annual Public Notification
Lake Superior School District offers a variety of
vocational opportunities through the Business Education, Industrial Technology,
and Family and Consumer Science Departments.
This notice is to inform students, parents,
employees and the general public that these opportunities are offered
regardless of race, color, national origin, sex or disability. Admission in the
specific courses is determined by grade level, and in some cases, completion of
prerequisite courses.
The District has designated the following
individuals to coordinate compliance with the federal laws Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Career Readiness, (college credit
available)
Students
will explore skills and interests and complete a search of career choices. Students will participate in a job shadow in
their desire career.
Family and Consumer
Sciences
FACS Basics
Students
will explore units in clothing and food preparation. Students will complete a basic sewing project
and learn survival sewing skills.
Students will learn to prepare healthy meals, explore food preparation
for breakfast, lunch and supper and snacks.
Independent Living
Independent
Living is the life survival class for you.
Survival skills include: savings, investing, retirement planning,
insurance, shopping skills, budgeting, balancing a checkbook and other life
skills.
Exploring Foods
Learn
more about the art of creative cuisine and culinary essentials. Students will prepare food in the following
areas: food preservation, fruit
leathers, beef jerky, jams and jellies, homemade ice cream, soups and stews,
seafood, regional foods, and more.
Creative Fashion
This
course offers students the skills and ideas to create fashion projects of their
choice. Student will learn about current
fashion designer trends, basic clothing construction, follow step by step
directions and operate a sewing machine.
Creative Cookery
Learn
the art of creative cuisine and culinary essentials while preparing foods in
the areas of appetizers, salads, casseroles, main dish meals, pasta and more.
Industrial Technology
Machine Tool Technology
Students
will learn to safely operate basic metal cutting and forming machines including
machine lathes, milling machine, drilling, grinding, heat treatment and foundry
operation.
Prerequisite: Intro to Industrial Technology
Advanced Welding
Students
interested in course may be interested in pursuing a career in welding. This course will provide students with a
solid introduction of the field of metal fabrication and manufacturing. The coursework for this course is aligned
with guidelines with the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.
Prerequisite: Basic Welding
Metals/Mechanics I
This
course of offered to students interested in repair of small powered equipment. Students will learn parts, functions and
repair of power equipment.
Prerequisite:
Intro to Industrial Technology
Metals/Mechanics II
This
course is the advanced study in repairs and fabrication. Emphasis will be to improve student skills in
metal and mechanical skills and knowledge.
Prerequisite: Basic Welding

Industrial Technology
Intro to Industrial Tech
This
course is designed to introduce students to future IT courses. Students study units in CAD, metals, woods
and blueprint reading.
Welding
This
course teaches students the fundamentals of welding safety, cutting and arch,
oxy-acetylene and mig welding.
Machine Tool
This
course teaches students the fundamentals of Machine Tool Technology. Students learn to use precision measuring
tools, sharpen tools, set-up and operate lathes and mills. Turn diameters, threads and tapers, square a
block drill and tap holes along with proper speeds and feeds.
CAD
Students
learn the introductory skills for using both AutoCAD LT and Pro Engineer. Students also learn further blueprint reading
skills and problem solving skills.
Students practice both mechanical and architectural drawings.
Woods
Woods is designed to give students the opportunity
to learn and enhance their knowledge on the correct use of hand tools
and power machines. The student will learn machine and shop
safety. Construction of a small project
will be required.
Family and
Consumer Science
Hospitality and Tourism
Hospitality is a “people serving people”
business. In this class emphasis will be
on the Food and Lodging segments of the industry. Students will learn of hospitality careers
and skills.
Exploring
Foods
The student will define the significance of food
and diet from a global perspective. The student will recognize and apply
personal and family values and goals in regard to food and nutrition choices.
The student will apply food preparation skills for maintaining nutrient
quality, appearance, and the safety of food.
Independent Living
The student will understand basic economic
principles. The student will identify
resources necessary for household management.
The student will understand sound consumer practices. Topics included are: Checking accounts,
Apartment Living, Credit/Credit cards, Food Selection, Clothing Selection and
Care, Insurance (Health, Life, Auto, Home/Renters
Culinary Arts
The student will explore the exciting science
behind food preparation. The student
will develop skills used in the food service industry. The student will develop skills in using
culinary techniques used in a professional kitchen.
Housing and Interior
Design
The student will identify personal and family
values and goals and their impact on housing decisions. The student will demonstrate an understanding
of how housing and interior design influence the physical, psychological, and
social well being of individuals and families.
Sew Creative .
Sewing skills are valuable skills to have. These skills can save you money, make you
money, and allow you to express creativity or achieve a style that is very
special and personal to you in your clothing, home décor, or crafts. .
Child Care Lab
The students will identify the physical,
emotional, social, and intellectual stages of a child's development from 4 to 6
years of age. The student will identify,
explore, and evaluate the various types of child care programs and careers. The
student will participate in the planning and implementation of a child care lab.
Business Education
Career Readiness
This
course is required for all 11th graders. Students will develop skills is career
exploration, planning and decision making.
Résumé writing, cover letters, work skills and responsibilities, and
interview skills will be covered in this course. Students will have an opportunity to
participate in a job shadow and mock interview
Accounting I
After completing this
course the student will know terminology related to accounting careers.
Understand entry-level positions, educational requirements, and career
opportunities in accounting.
Identify applications of
accounting concepts. Demonstrate the ability to keep records, interpret and
analyze those records necessary to carry on a small business.

Consumer Math
This
course is designed to prepare students for the mathematics used in everyday
life. Students will work with topics
including: percentages, sales,
budgeting, better buy, banking, credit cards, loans, health insurance, planning
for retirement and more.
