What Is S.O.L.O?

Many factors contribute to success, self-esteem and employability. Just as many factors contribute to failure and drop-out rates. And, in today's high-paced, technical society, students need every edge. . .basic to survival and success is a diploma.

The Lake Superior School District recognizes this need and also knows that every student is different. Most students are able to succeed in the traditional classroom; however, others find traditional school an unreasonable challenge. The program is designed to give students and adults the opportunity to complete studies for a high school diploma. The curriculum and learning materials are especially designed for individuals who have not met success in the traditional high school setting. Individualized instruction allows each students to progress and achieve academic success at their own pace.

Who Can Enroll?

The Minnesota Department of Education rules and regulations and Minnesota Statues determine whether students are eligible. Included among eligible groups are students who are:

  • at least two grades below performance on local achievement tests

  • at least one year behind in completing course work

  • pregnant or parenting

  • chemically dependent

  • physically or sexually abused

  • experienced mental health problems

  • homeless sometime in the last six months

  • referred by a school district

What Classes Can I Take Through S.O.L.O?

Presently the Lake Superior School District Alternative Learning Program offers all core course requirements: English, Math, Social Studies, Science and Computers.

How Do I Get Started?

The alternative classes are individually designed for each student. Transcripts are evaluated and students know the number of credits and courses they need to graduate. From there, students can proceed at their own rate.

It is easy to get started in our program. If you are still in school, talk to your guidance counselor. If you are out of school, call to make an appointment.
