“Read to Succeed” Two Harbors Student Posters
Every year, the ALA (The American Library Association) releases new “READ” posters to promote reading. The READ posters highlight celebrities posing with a favorite book. Borrowing the idea from the ALA, local THHS students are highlighted in a “Read to Succeed” poster project displayed in both the High School and Minnehaha Elementary.
THHS is fortunate to have a professional photographer on staff, and math teacher/photographer Brian Rauvola of HBR Studios takes the photos for the posters. The students represented in the posters are recommended by coaches and teachers because of a combination of both academic success in school and participation in extra-curricular activities.
Selecting the perfect book to pose with has been fun for everyone involved. Some books followed the theme of the student's activity while other students knew which book they wanted to use in their poster regardless of the pose. For example, we have a soccer player reading “Froggy Plays Soccer” as he bounces a soccer ball on his knee while another student chose to pose with his favorite childhood book, “Farewell to Shady Glade”.
Brian Rauvola photographs the students in locations all over town including the golf course, baseball dugout, athletic fields, hockey locker room, high school gym, auditorium, band room and in his own studio in Two Harbors to get the backgrounds perfect for the posters. He then works throughout the summer to crop, edit and add text overlays to the photographs. The results far exceeded everyone’s expectations. The posters are amazing works of art that recognize a number of our multitalented students in the high school.
The high school students who posed for the posters also go into the elementary schools and read to the students in the primary grades as part of the project. If you have an opportunity, stop into the local schools to check the new posters out.
